A two-stage auger rides above the surface on adjustable skid shoes, so stones stay put. That one fact rules out half the market and makes the rest easy to sort.

No. The rubber auger contacts the surface by design — that's how it propels the machine — and it will pick up and throw stones at any speed. Use a two-stage machine with the skid shoes raised.
About ½ to ¾ inch between the scraper bar and the surface to start; some owners go to an inch on loose stone. Lower them for the paved section if you have one.
