Best snow blower for Gravel Driveways
Gravel changes the whole decision. A single-stage machine's rubber auger scrapes the surface — on stone, that means a 30-mph stream of gravel aimed at your windows, your car, and your neighbor. A two-stage auger rides above the surface on adjustable skid shoes, so stones stay put. That one fact rules out half the market and makes the rest easy to sort.

- ▸Two-stage augers never touch the ground; the scraper bar's height is set by the skid shoes on either side of the housing. Raise them for gravel, drop them for the paved apron.

- ▸Tracks are nice but not necessary; good tires and a 24–28 inch machine handle most gravel drives.

- ▸Leave an inch or so of snow on the gravel — trying to scrape to the stone is how you end up with a driveway in the lawn by March.
- ▸Expect to re-set skid shoes a couple of times the first season as you learn your surface; composite or poly skids glide over stone better than steel.
- ▸Mark the driveway edges with stakes before the ground freezes — on gravel there's no curb to tell you where it ends.

Can I use a single-stage snow blower on gravel if I go slow?
No. The rubber auger contacts the surface by design — that's how it propels the machine — and it will pick up and throw stones at any speed. Use a two-stage machine with the skid shoes raised.
How high should I set the skid shoes on gravel?
About ½ to ¾ inch between the scraper bar and the surface to start; some owners go to an inch on loose stone. Lower them for the paved section if you have one.
