A single-stage snow blower uses one rubber-edged auger to both scoop the snow and throw it, and that same auger pulls the machine forward. Corded-electric and 99–212cc gas versions clear 18–22 inch paths through up to 8–10 inches of snow, scrape paved surfaces almost clean, and weigh little enough to lift into a truck. They're the right tool for most suburban driveways — and the wrong tool for gravel, steep slopes, and the wall the plow leaves at the curb.
