True Temper 18-Inch Ergonomic Poly Shovel/Pusher Review

A lighter, cheaper ergonomic combo shovel from the name that's been on shovels for a century.

True Temper 18-Inch Ergonomic Poly Shovel/Pusher

The verdict

True Temper's 18-inch ergonomic poly combo is the value alternative to the Suncast: the same bent-handle idea, a poly blade with a steel wear strip, and a D-grip, at a lower price and a little less weight. It's a touch less substantial but just as back-friendly, and for most walks and driveways the difference is academic. If you want two good shovels โ€” one by the front door, one in the garage โ€” make this the second.

Full review

True Temper is the Ames Companies' tool brand, which means the shovel comes from the largest hand-tool maker in North America and is sold on essentially every hardware shelf. This 18-inch ergonomic combo takes the proven bent-handle shape โ€” blade flat on the ground, hands up, back straight โ€” and delivers it for the price of a large pizza.

The blade is poly with a steel wear strip, so it slides over wet snow and scrapes to pavement, and the 18-inch width keeps each scoop to a sensible weight. The handle is steel with a D-grip; it flexes a touch more than the Suncast under a full load of slush but it's never felt like a weak point in years of owner use. It's also a little lighter, which matters if the main job is a flight of steps.

Versus the Suncast, it's the slightly lesser tool at a meaningfully lower price. Most households are best served by owning both: this one by the door for the quick morning clear, the heavier Suncast in the garage for the real work.

Best for: Budget-minded buyers, second shovels for the front door, and anyone who wants ergonomic lifting without the Suncast's heft.
