Snow Joe Premium Enviro Blend Ice Melt & Deicer, 50 lb Review

A CMA-blended, green-coated ice melt that's easier on concrete, metal, and vegetation than straight rock salt — the least expensive bag in the category by a wide margin.

Snow Joe Premium Enviro Blend Ice Melt & Deicer, 50 lb

The verdict

Peladow and Safe Paw sit at the two ends of this catalog's ice-melt coverage — maximum cold-weather power and maximum pet/plant safety, respectively — and both cost more per pound than plain rock salt. Snow Joe's Premium Enviro Blend is the middle ground: a calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) additive makes it gentler on concrete, metal railings, and lawns than straight salt, green-coated crystals make it easy to see where you've spread it, and a 50-pound bag costs less than half of Peladow's. It works to a more modest -10°F rather than Peladow's -25°F, so it's not the pick for the coldest snaps, but for routine walks and steps in normal winter weather it's the budget-friendly, less-corrosive default this catalog didn't have.

What we like

  • +CMA additive is gentler on concrete, metal railings, and lawns than plain rock salt
  • +Green-coated crystals show exactly where you've spread it, making it easy to dose lightly
  • +The least expensive bag in this category by a wide margin
  • +Works on surfaces longer, so less product is needed per application (mfr)
  • +Doesn't dry out skin or track a slimy residue indoors the way some blends do (mfr)

What to know

  • −Effective to about -10°F (mfr) — well short of Peladow's -25°F for the harshest cold snaps
  • −Not marketed or formulated as fully pet-safe like Safe Paw — keep pets off treated areas
  • −A blend, not a single-ingredient product — read the bag before using near sensitive plantings
  • −50 lb bag is heavy to carry and pour one-handed

Full review

This catalog's ice-melt coverage so far has been two specialists: Peladow for the coldest, iciest conditions and Safe Paw for households built around pets and plantings. Snow Joe's Premium Enviro Blend fills the space between them — a general-purpose deicer that costs meaningfully less than either while still improving on plain rock salt. The active difference is calcium magnesium acetate, blended in to reduce the corrosion and vegetation damage that straight sodium chloride causes, without pricing the bag like a specialty product.

The green-coated crystals are a small detail that matters in practice: because you can see exactly where the product has landed, it's easier to apply a light, even coat instead of dumping a heavy-handed pile that wastes product and does more environmental damage than necessary. Snow Joe also markets the blend as working longer per application than plain salt and as gentler on hands, so it doesn't demand gloves the way some industrial deicers do.

Know where its limits are. Rated to about -10°F, it will stop working in the depth of cold where Peladow's calcium chloride keeps going, and it isn't a substitute for Safe Paw if a dog in the house licks its paws after every walk. For the much larger number of days that fall in between — a normal icy morning, a coating on the front steps, a driveway apron after the plow goes by — it's the ice melt this catalog was missing at a price that doesn't make you ration it.

Best for: Everyday walks, steps, and driveway aprons in typical winter cold, for households that want a less corrosive ice melt than rock salt without paying Peladow or Safe Paw prices.
